The short answer
Fine-mesh resin has smaller beads with more surface, sold for softening water with some clear-water iron; it doesn't handle oxidized iron.
What it is
Smaller beads, more surface area per cubic foot. It needs a valve and distributor screen that hold back the smaller beads.
Where it fits
- Clear (ferrous) iron within the softener's stated limits.
- Not red (oxidized) iron, which fouls any resin.
- Above about 5 ppm, an iron filter goes first (Penn State).

Questions readers ask
Is fine mesh resin better for iron?
Sellers recommend it for clear-water iron within limits; it doesn't replace an iron filter for high or oxidized iron.
Can I put fine mesh resin in any softener?
Check that the valve's distributor screen holds the smaller beads.
