About

About Softenry

A softener is sold on one number, its grain rating. That number is measured at a heavy salt dose and says nothing about the resin inside, the control valve on top, the flow it can pass or how often it will regenerate in your house.

Softenry starts from the other end: your hardness, any iron in your water, the people at home and the bathrooms they use. From those, the sizing tool works out the grains a softener has to remove every week, and every softener in the catalog is checked against that load at an efficient salt setting.

The same catalog covers what keeps a softener running for years: salt, replacement resin, brine tanks and floats, bypass valves and the rebuild kits, pistons and boards for Fleck, Clack and Autotrol heads. Iron and sulfur filters and salt-free conditioners sit alongside for well water and for homes that can't or won't add salt.

Who runs it

Softenry is an independent publication. It doesn't sell equipment, install it or take payment to list a product. Some links earn a commission, explained in the affiliate disclosure.
